Top 5 Ways to Improve Your Mountain Bike Fitness

Lets start the week right. Here's 5 ways to improve your mountain bike fitness :  1. Ride more It's so obvious...but so true! The more you ride, the  fitter you are going to be. Make a real effort to get  out on those short, extra rides. Even just 30 minutes makes a difference. The more you get out on the  bike, the fitter you are going to be. Consider commuting to work and taking every chance you can to get out for a quick spin. 2. Lift weights (or do bodyweight workouts at home) Lifting weights, or doing bodyweight sessions at home, is  hugely important for getting fitter on the bike. Having a strong  legs, core and upper body makes a massive difference to how you feel on the...

Fail to prepare (your meals) and prepare to fail

When it comes to riding performance, nutrition is SO important.  Not just what you eat before, duringand after a ride but what you eat the rest of the time.  Whether you are super lean already, or need to lose a few pounds (or stone!) you'll benefit from eating well. Another trainer in the gym made a comment last week about how dedicated one of my clients is to getting results. He turns up to every session withme with 3 or 4 meals prepared intupperware boxes ready for him to eat at work after he goes. He's got wicked results - and it's unsurprising because he's so organised and dedicated to his food!  Nutrition is important for so many reasons! Just a few are :  - Increased...

Adam replied to an email on training for Endurance events :  "Hi Matt,  First up a thumbs up for the daily emails, they're always a good read on my coffee break at work and I've learnt a lot from them.  So, I'm doing an event, first one and I'm buzzing for it. Mega busy life so it can be a struggle getting the miles in some weeks. Anyway my question is this, the event I'm doing has a lot of climbing in it and its relatively flat where I live, how can I train so that the climbing doesn't wipe me out completely.  Cheers mate,  Adam" Great question...and there are definitely things you can do to build up your fitness...

Will Weight Training Help Your Riding?

My mate Phil is really killing it. Really training hard on the bike and he has gotten MUCH fitter. One thing he doesn't do though is lift weights. I was talking him into  joining the gym and  explaining the various benefits  to him such as :  - Increased lactate tolerance - More power  - More efficiency  - Better balance - More strength to power up steep climbs  - More strength to soak up impacts  - More protection on crashes - More strength to throw the bike around  - Better proprioception (that's knowing where your body is in space) - Better posture And a bazillion more benefits. Seriously, the benefits are HUGE from weight training when it comes to your riding. About 30% of...
